Introduction

Most of us find that while we're losing hair we'd prefer to hold onto, we're also growing hair we'd like to get rid of. To provide a resource to help you solve the problem of unwanted hair, as well as indulge in a variety of skincare treatments, we've established a partnership with Laser Solutions, Beverly Hills' premier medical spa, which specializes in laser hair removal. With 26 years in the business, Laser Solutions' director, Dana Elise, is a nationally recognized expert on hair removal and skincare who has served on the board of the Electrology Association of California. She is also a health and beauty consultant for the E! and Style networks. For further information, visit her website at www.lasersolutions90210.com.

Making Headlines With Hairlines

By Dana Elise, L.R.E.
Director, Laser Solutions Skincare

While Sword Medical Center has made a name for itself treating hair loss, we at Laser Solutions have been making a career out of removing unwanted hair. And I'll bet that while you've been paying attention to the hair loss on your head, you've been growing hair you'd rather be without in other places!

As hair removal experts for the past 26 years, using electrolysis and the IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) laser, we kill hair for a living, literally. So I'll zap straight to the point by answering some commonly asked questions about the most effective methods of hair removal.

Q: Where can the IPL laser be used?
A: Basically, almost anywhere. The most popular areas include the back, neck, shoulders, ears, the top of the nose, and around the nostril (but not inside). We can also use it to "sculpt" abdominal hair to create the illusion of a trimmer physique (more on this next month), and thin out or completely remove beards, which helps to avoid ingrown hairs. And women routinely have laser hair removal on the bikini line, upper and lower legs, and underarms. (Electrolysis is most effective for shaping hairlines.)

This method works best on dark, coarse hair. Blond, gray, white, and extremely fine hairs can't be "targeted" by the IPL laser, so if you're planning to have laser hair removal, we advise doing it before hair turns gray. If hair is extremely fine and/or light, we recommend electrolysis.

Q: Is laser hair removal permanent?
A: The average success rate for women ranges between 85 and 90 percent after a minimum of six sessions, which is the recommended course of treatment. For men, who have higher testosterone levels, the kill rate drops to between 75 and 85 percent. The need for periodic maintenance treatments depends on an individual's hormones and genetics.

Q: How long before the results of laser hair removal is noticeable?
A: Seven to 21 days after each treatment you'll see a 30 to 35 percent decrease in visible hair. How much grows back depends, again, on hormones and genetics. But what's killed is killed; hair that grows back is finer and lighter.

Q: Is laser hair removal painful?
A: Treatments are easily tolerated-especially if we apply numbing cream 35 to 40 minutes before. We usually use an over-the-counter numbing cream called EMLA, or Ella-Max, but our on-site doctor can prescribe stronger formulas if necessary.

Q: What are the most sensitive areas of the body to treat with the IPL laser?
A: Those with the most nerve endings: the upper lip, back of the neck, and inner bikini line.

Q: Are there any areas that can't be treated with the IPL laser?
A: It can't be used deep inside the nose and ears-or over tattoos, because it removes the color pigment. And we don't recommend the laser for eyebrows because it's not precise enough to be most effective. For eyebrows we advise electrolysis.

In the coming months I'll be talking about other services available at Laser Solutions, including rejuvenating photofacials, microdermabrasion, electrolysis, Botox, leg- and broken "spider"-vein treatments, and more.
