Realistic Expectations
Although the vast majority of the nearly 20,000 surgical
patients Dr. Sword has personally treated are completely satisfied,
every now and then we will hear a patient utter these words.
We've found that wanting greater density isn't a question
of whether the procedure was successful, rather it's a question
of expectations. But what are realistic expectations when
considering surgical hair transplantation?
There are many variables to consider, but first here are
some guidelines to be aware of that can help insure that your
expectations are realistic and more importantly that your
expectations are realized:
· You should never expect to retain the same hair
density you had as a teenager, nor should you expect that
surgical hair transplantation could ever get you back to that
density once you've lost it. If that is your expectation,
then hair transplantation is probably not right for you. Possibly
a hairpiece or hair-system can give you the thick density
you desire.
· You may have already lost 50% of your hair density
before you even realized it was thinning and began to take
action.
· Hair transplantation can only relocate the hair;
it cannot produce more hair.
· Hair transplantation does not stop native hair from
thinning and loss. Transplanted hairs are permanent, but surrounding
native hairs that are pre-disposed to thinning and loss will
continue on that course.
· Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this is
a very personal, elective procedure. If your hair is thinner
than you'd like, following surgical hair transplantation,
then perhaps another procedure will help you achieve the results
you are looking for.
Here are some specific procedural expectations you should
be able to count on when dealing with a qualified and experienced
surgeon:
1) The results should be perfectly natural, undetectable
and permanent.
2) The front hairline should begin at the upper one-third
of the face, keeping the face in proper proportion.
3) For men, the temple recession area should be deep and
not rounded, which prevents the hairline from looking like
a female hairline.
4) The edge of the hairline should be jagged, never having
grafted hair placed with uniformity or in rows. This creates
a "zone" of hair rather than an actual "line"
of hair, which looks more natural.
5) All grafts (follicular units) along a hairline should
be single-hairs.
6) Follicular units should be kept in their natural state,
simply relocating hair from the donor area to areas of thinning
and loss - just like Mother Nature intended.
7) Transplanted grafts should be placed randomly throughout
the areas of thinning and loss, blending with and mirroring
the natural growth pattern and direction of native hair.
8) Transplanted grafts should be spaced appropriately, allowing
for maximum hair density and the assurance that all viable
follicles will ultimately grow healthy, permanent hair.
And along with the many advancements made in hair transplant
surgery, an experienced surgeon has greater understanding
of how the following have a major impact on the end result:
A) Ratio of Supply (donor hair) and Demand (thinning or balding
area). A patient with a hair loss Class 2 to Class 5 will
end up with a denser result than a patient who starts out
as a hair loss Class 6 or Class 7.
B) The Caliber (diameter) of each Hair Shaft. Thicker hair
shafts will provide greater coverage and volume than fine
hair.
C) The Body of the Hair. Curly and wavy hairs tend to create
greater coverage than straight hair, resulting in the appearance
of greater density.
D) The Contrast between the Scalp and the Hair. In essence
what hair density does is diminish the contrast (or view)
of scalp through hair. If the scalp has a light appearance
and the hair is dark, the contrast is greater, making the
hair look thinner and less dense.
E) The Density of the Donor Area. The donor area is the source
of the hairs used in surgical hair transplantation. The greater
the density (hairs per square inch), the more available donor
hairs for possible future procedures.
F) Future Thinning and Loss. It's crucial to anticipate and
gage potential future thinning, recession and loss when undergoing
surgical hair transplantation. Hairlines recede, hair thins
and hair goes away. It takes experience and understanding
to evaluate these effectively.
All this being said, still the most important decision when
considering surgical hair transplantation is the surgeon who
will be performing the procedure. If you choose the right
surgeon, you'll have the best possible results and the best
chance at achieving your goals and realizing your expectations.
I hope this information helps those who are considering surgical
hair transplantation to keep their expectations realistic
and be aware of the limitations of this procedure.
Best regards,
