Counselor - Friend or Foe?

Chances are if you're reading this you're very likely considering some form of hair restoration. At the very least you're concerned with that ever-increasing amount of scalp that seems to be showing through as time goes by. To date the most permanent form of hair restoration is the micro-surgical transplantation of the hair from the back of the head to the top and front. Because of advances in medical instrumentation as well as surgical techniques, today's hair transplantation typically produces amazingly natural results at a very affordable fee.

Should you decide to pursue this route and you begin contacting hair transplant practices you will likely find yourself face-to-face with the hair restoration patient counselor - some surgical practices call these patient educators "Consultants," "Patient Liaison Representatives" and so on. But nonetheless the patient counselor can be viewed as a friend or a foe. Some prospective patients may see the counselor as a "salesperson" who is focused on getting them to make a commitment to schedule their surgery with a particular medical practice. I suppose some counselors earn that reputation. I've found, however, that on the whole the counselor can be the "best friend" of the prospective patient.

Think about it, in many cases the counselor has had the procedure themselves. Often times they have had several procedures. They can speak from personal experience. There is a great deal to learn from them in understanding hair loss, options for reversal, pros and cons of the surgical procedure and determining if it makes sense for you. These patient educators talk about hair restoration all day and every day. They read hair restoration periodicals. They go to hair restoration conferences. They are aware of all of the different types of over-the-counter and prescription solutions as well as their efficacy and treatment parameters. They, even more so than the surgeons themselves, are the first line and are the cornerstone in educating the prospective patient.

For a dedicated counselor, the primary objective in the consultation is education. Accordingly, the adept counselor provides all of the necessary information so that you can make the decision that meets your own unique concerns, needs, and expectations. This initial interview is the first and often the most important step in the hair loss assessment. They understand that hair loss is a sensitive and personal matter. An empathetic counselor will approach this matter by providing you with relevant information tailored toward your specific circumstances. They will assess all pertinent factors including your age, hair characteristics, degenerative pattern and progression, amount and quality of suitable donor, expected restoration time frame, and financial considerations. The counselor will also show case studies of before and after photographs, as well as the progression of the treatment involved.

In cases involving transplantation, they may suggest potential graft quantity, number of procedures, and associated cost will also be discussed in detail. Your counselor may also suggest a hairline design that addresses your facial structure, while referring prior patients willing to share their hair restoration experience with you. When clients are not considered appropriate candidates for surgery, he may suggest alternative therapies toward your desired objective. In short, the hair restoration counselor can be your best friend when it comes to making the right decision about reversing your hair loss.
