The Wand
No its not a new promotional giveaway for the latest
Harry Potter Movie.
The Wand is a new anesthesia delivery system used in hair
restoration surgery. Typically local anesthesia is applied
with a syringe to the donor area (the place at the back of
the head where the grafts are harvested) and the receptor
area (the place at the top and front of the head where the
grafts are re-located). The introduction of the Wand revolutionizes
the delivery of anesthesia, significantly reducing the pain
and discomfort associated with a traditional syringe.
The Wand represents the first major technological advancement
in anesthesia delivery since the syringe was invented more
than 150 years ago. It is truly a state-of-the-art method
in consistently and comfortably administering local anesthesia
to hair restoration patients. With the Wand, anesthesia can
be delivered in a more consistent manner. This also reduces
the risk of swelling and significantly reduces or eliminates
pain.
Various studies have shown that the fear and anxiety levels
associated with injections are dramatically reduced, and at
the University of California a recent study has shown that
80% of patients prefer the Wand delivery system rather than
the traditional syringe technique. Patients who have experience
with anesthesia delivered through a traditional syringe are
amazed at how much the Wand reduces discomfort.
There are three physical components to any injection which
play a role in what the patient experiences:
1. Initial penetration of the needle into the tissue
2. Advancement of the needle through the tissue
3. Deposition of the anesthesia fluid into the tissue
Most of the pain is caused by the flow of the fluid anesthetic,
so pain increases when the anesthetic is injected too quickly
or unevenly, creating a burning sensation. The Wand regulates
the flow of anesthesia in order to reduce pain and discomfort.
In addition the delicate, light pen-grip of the Wand does
not resemble a syringe and is, therefore, not as threatening
in appearance.
The core technology of the Wand is the computer-controlled
delivery of the anesthesia solution at a controlled flow rate,
regardless of the variation in tissue resistance. The Wand
has an onboard micro-processor that delivers the anesthesia
in a controlled, consistent flow. The result is a virtually
pain-free injection of a better targeted area and lower dosage
of required anesthetic
As a hair restoration surgeon, I have found the Wand to be
a valuable tool in reducing patient discomfort. I ensure that
the Wand is used with all of my patients, and I recommend
anyone considering surgical hair restoration discuss the use
of the Wand with their surgeon.
If you seek more information about hair restoration, I recommend
that you contact a medical doctor that has years of experience
specializing only in hair restoration. These professionals
see the most number of patients and have the greatest level
of experience.
Thank you and Best regards,
Randall Sword, MD, FACEP, Diplomat of the American Board
of Hair Restoration Surgeons
