He’d brought along a stack of cutout newspaper ads from hair transplant surgeons, yellow page listings and had about a half dozen brochures he’d received from some of the more familiar names in the industry. He’d pointed out that some ads talked about cost, some mentioned their “patented new blade,” some even had a microscope named after them. There were ads touting “mega-sessions,” multistate surgical centers and snazzy new lasers and electro-magnetic devices that may offer some hope to thinning hair. After going through virtually every one of the ads, Steve looked up at me and said, “But what about the doctor?” He went on to make a very powerful point, one that we’ve focused on for years...“The tools, the gadgets, the catchy names, the number of facilities, the low cost… the hype doesn’t matter. It won’t make a difference in the quality of care or ultimately in the quality of results. What matters most is the doctor.” I congratulated Steve on discovering this himself… on being able to read between the lines and to separate the hype from the reality, because it is sometimes difficult to do so. With the proliferation of unverifiable information just a click away on the internet, countless claims contradicting each other at every website… all worded in believable ways to touch us when we’re our most vulnerable, we sometimes don’t know where to turn. When we’re suffering from hair loss, we want to believe in a “magic pill” or a new technology that promises results. We hope, and we sometimes place that hope and our trust in the wrong places. Once you’ve decided that surgical hair transplantation is the solution for you (and more and more men and women each day are coming to that decision,) think of it as you would any other surgical procedure. Are you going to make a decision based on the products a physician uses? Are you going to make a decision based on how many surgical centers the doctor has? You are going to make a decision based on the surgeon himself, his experience, his skill. Who’s the right surgeon to give me the best possible care, the best possible surgery and ultimately the best possible results. That’s what you will focus on.
