Facial-Hair Restoration
Hair loss comes in many forms. The most common form is male and female pattern loss, androgenetic alopecia, which affects hair follicles on the scalp. Rarer forms of loss, such as alopecia areata, can result in complete hair loss on the scalp, areata totalis, and in its worst form, total body hair loss, areata universalis.
For many men and women, however, facial hair loss is just as important a consideration and the source of an equal amount of frustration, embarrassment and pain.
Surgical hair restoration, “hair transplantation”, is permanent and perfectly natural. And surgical hair restoration works just as well on eyebrows and upper lips as it does on hairlines and crowns. And just like scalp hair restoration, facial hair restoration requires an experienced, talented and artistic surgeon to yield the results you’re looking for.
Here are a few considerations with facial hair restoration:
- Donor hairs are still harvested from the permanent, thick hairs in the back of the head. Although the hairs are different than native eyebrow or facial hairs, they are your hairs and they blend beautifully.
- Facial hair grows at a rate similar to scalp hair, so the implanted hairs will not require supplemental grooming. Eyebrow hairs, however, do not continue to grow. They grow to a half-inch or so then stop. The implanted hairs, since they come from the back of the scalp, will continue to grow, just like the hairs on your scalp. This means that you’ll have to trim the implanted hairs every couple weeks to maintain the proper length and overall look you are attempting.
- Allowing implanted hairs to grow slightly longer than surrounding native hairs in the eyebrow can increase perceived density and provide greater coverage. This can really be an advantage, and it is something that isn’t possible with native eyebrow hairs alone.
Facial hair restoration surgery requires significantly fewer hair follicles to be transplanted than the average scalp hair restoration procedure. Generally, 100 to 120 grafts (natural follicular units) are all it takes to provide good eyebrow coverage. Moustaches, beards, goatees… based on the area to be covered, these procedures range between 200 to 600 grafts (natural follicular units).
The procedures are simple, safe and effective. A quick out-patient procedure, a couple of days of comfortable recovery and you’re all done. The new hairs will begin to grow in about three months.
Hair loss, in every form, affects millions of men and women every day. There is a solution. There is a treatment option.
