THE PROGRESSION OF THE HAIRLINE
There have been massive changes in surgical hair restoration
during the last decade. The result of the improved technologies
has been a far more natural, nearly undetectable hairline.
These recreated hairlines allow both men and women to experience
the satisfaction of "having their hair back." In
addition these changes have resulted in an easier nearly pain-free
procedure. Today's surgical hair restoration is not much different
than a visit to the dentist for a filling or crown.
Hair Transplants of the Past
In the 50's, 60's, 70's and into the mid 80's, hair transplant
grafts consisted of round 4 mm or 3/16" diameter (pencil
eraser size) plugs, which were removed from the back (donor
area) of the head and were made up of 20 to 30 hairs each.
These grafts were placed in a straight line across the front
hairline, resulting in a pluggy or "doll hair" look.
This method required four to five surgical sessions. In the
mid 80's, 3.5 mm diameter round plugs were used in the front
hairline area, and a second row of 4 mm plugs were placed
behind the first row. By the late 80's, the round 4 mm plugs
were split in half, creating two 2mm grafts consisting of
10 to 15 hairs each. These were then placed in the first row
with 4 mm plugs behind them.
The March of Time
Technology continued to improve and doctors found that by
the early 90's, the 4 mm grafts could be split twice, or quartered,
and placed in the front hairline. These were called mini grafts
and usually consisted of four to eight hairs each. Strips
of various sizes and widths were being removed, sutured closed,
and cut into various size grafts. By the time the mid 90's
approached, the front row of the hairline was now entirely
made up of mini grafts and micro grafts, which were also called
follicular units, consisting of one to three hairs each. Larger
grafts were then placed ¼" to ½" behind
the first row to increase the density. In the late 90's, the
front hairline was made up of hundreds of micro grafts only.
Today's Hair Transplants
Today, the micro grafts (follicular units) have gone from
a straight frontal hairline to a wavy line more representative
of a natural, God-given hairline. The present state of the
art finds single hair grafts placed in a random, jagged, saw-tooth
fashion, which rather accurately simulates the natural hairline.
Two to three-hair grafts are then placed approximately ½"
behind the first row to give the appearance of density.
Changing Lives
This surgically transplanted hair is permanent and will never
fall out. It can be styled and combed in any fashion and probably
best of all it changes the way people feel about themselves
and how they are perceived by others. They look younger and
consequently FEEL younger. They become more vibrant people
and seem to enjoy life to a greater degree. I am both honored
and proud to be a surgeon in this field. It is an honor to
be able to help so many men and women experience this kind
of change in their life.
Thank you and my best to you all,
Randall Sword, M.D., F.A.C.E.P.
