America’s Baldest Cities
With over 100 million men and women suffering from hair loss each year, we find that every state, every city has its fair share of those of us who are losing our hair.
But what cities top the list as the “baldest cities in America,” and is there anything we can learn from this?
Based on hair loss treatment options purchased per capita between July 1st, 2003, and June 30th, 2004, (comprised of Rogaine and Propecia purchases and surgical hair transplantation procedures by residency) we find the top five clear winners are:
- Corpus Christi, Texas
- Washington, DC
- Baltimore, Maryland
- San Antonio, Texas
- Atlanta, Georgia
There are many possible explanations, we’ve found, or it could simply be a matter of chance. Dr. Vivian Bucay, a San Antonio based dermatologist, points out that “These five cities, in addition to having higher than average hair loss per capita have a higher than average rate of diabetes. Research points to a link between insulin resistance and hair loss.”
Other possible explanations are that the top five cities tend to see a higher than average hat-wearing populous. Dr. Michael Solomon, a Washington DC based cosmetic surgeon, states that “Male pattern baldness, although a genetic problem, can be exacerbated by constantly wearing tight-fitting caps or hats.”
Each of these cities has dramatic weather changes throughout the year – with oppressive heat and humidity in the summer to unbearable cold in the winter. Could the increased number of hair loss sufferers have something to do with climate?
What about dietary concerns? The top five cities for hair loss are also among the cities ranked lowest in the country for healthy lifestyles. Obesity, high-blood pressure, diabetes, low-levels of physical activity are all at higher than average levels in these cities.
What about stress? We know that stress can cause temporary hair loss, and in severe cases increase the amount and rate of male pattern loss. How do these cities rate in terms of stress? Well, as you might have already guessed, the top five cities for hair loss are all on the top ten list of cities with residents treating stress through pharmacology, psychology and homeopathy.
Does this information tell us anything new? Have we learned something that can help us fight hair loss more effectively?
Basically, we find that hair loss is a genetic condition that can be exaggerated by diet, climate, mental state, prescription drugs and other external factors. To fight hair loss successfully, we must consider all of these factors when choosing a hair restoration plan. Eat right, exercise, find a sense of peace in life… and if you’re looking for a permanent and natural solution to hair loss, give us a call at Sword Medical Center.
Whatever the cause of your hair loss… however extreme… we have answers, and we have solutions.
Give us a call today.
