Approaches To Hair Transplant Sessions
The last ten years have witnessed a dramatic increase in
the numbers of men seeking surgical hair restoration. Today,
hair transplantation accounts for the number one cosmetic
surgical procedure performed for men. Consequently, technique
refinement has markedly influenced superior results over past
methods otherwise responsible for the pluggy or cornrow
appearance commonly associated with outdated methods.
Graft Size
The major improvement in contemporary hair transplantation
compared to past procedures involves the follicular unit itself.
Approximately fifteen years ago, transplant surgeons began
to critically correlate results with graft size. They correctly
deduced that transplanting smaller grafts containing fewer
hairs would negate the all-too characteristic clumping,
while providing improved uniformity and achieving better results.
This advancement thus introduced the new era of mini or micro-grafting.
Application
The redistribution of these smaller grafts currently represents
the contemporary standard in hair transplantation. Consequently,
this basis leaves a remaining debate involving their application
through phased versus mega session procedures. While traditional
hair restoration has involved staging multiple surgical sessions,
the appeal of larger ones affords patients fewer surgeries
to achieve a predetermined result in a shorter period of time.
However, dependent upon an individuals specific hair
loss characteristics, even mega sessions lend toward a recommended
repeat procedure to achieve a greater density and an optimal
natural result.
Goal
Hair restoration techniques should seek to mimic nature in
both quality and quantity. Results so natural that recognition
as a transplant procedure is difficult, can readily be accomplished
today by transplanting larger numbers of smaller grafts. Whether
achieving a natural looking head of hair is accomplished through
the phased or mega session approach remains an issue among
respective surgeons within the industry.
Conclusion
The goal of hair transplantation should ultimately be the
quality of its result. How should someone contemplating hair
restoration make an informed decision toward a preferred outcome?
As in any surgical procedure, careful consideration should
be afforded to selecting the right doctor with the correct
experience, honesty, and commitment in doing what is right
for you. At the Sword Medical Center, Dr. Swords extensive
experience and dedicated approach exemplifies his entire staffs
commitment to the complete satisfaction of every patient.
This is where the real difference lies.
