It's A Matter of Proportion

How do you create the perfect hair line?

When our hair lines recede, and we’re suffering from hair loss, we tend to believe that “density” is the Holy Grail of hair restoration. We think that the only way we’ll be happy is when our hair is as thick and dense as it was when we were 15 years old.

We begin to learn, however, that density is only a part of an overall hair restoration plan, that “proportion” is just as important, if not more so than density. A natural looking hairline positioned effectively brings proportion to our face. Proper proportion is what allows us to look our age, and lack of proportion is what makes us look older than our years.

We wear baseball caps to hide the fact that we no longer have a hair line, and when we look into a mirror with our caps on, we see the face that we remember. We look our age, because the cap acts as the top border to the face, putting it into proportion. We take the cap off, and we look twenty years older.

The face is divided into three equal segments. The bottom of the chin is the lower third (the bottom frame) and the hairline is the upper third (the top frame). From the chin to the bottom of the nose is one segment. The bottom of the nose to in between the eyes is the second segment. In between the eyes to the start of the hair line is the third segment. When these are equally spaced, our face is in proportion and we like what we see.

So for those of us suffering from hair line recession and hair loss, we’re looking for an experienced, talented and artistic hair restoration surgeon to help bring proportion back to our face by creating a natural and permanent hair line – a scattered line of single-hairs spanning from temple to temple.

The temple-recession areas of our hair line, just like the front-center of our hair line, must be proportional as well. There are distinct lines that determine where a natural temple-recession should be, and when everything is in its place, proportion is complete.

Temple-recessions are the extension of two lines, intersecting just beneath the chin and extending above the outermost section of the eyebrows. The front-center of the hairline arcs slightly towards the top-back of the head then arcs again forward, blending into the thicker hairs on the side of the head.

When the hairline and temple-recessions are in proportion, our face has symmetry, and again, we like what we see. Or think of it this way…
