The Hair Restoration Report – October 2002

Often times I get many of the same questions from prospective patients. I thought I would take this opportunity to answer them for the readers of our "Hair Restoration Report. I hope that brief answers to these questions will be helpful for those considering surgical hair restoration. Before beginning any form of therapy I do encourage anyone suffering from hair loss to consult with a Board Certified Hair Restoration Physician in order to obtain a medical evaluation of their condition.

Randall Sword, MD, FACEP

Frequently Asked Questions:

1) Will my transplanted hair grow like my previous hair?

Yes, your transplanted hair is not like your own hair, it is your own hair! Hair transplantation is merely a re-organization or a redistribution of your own hair, it is not “new hair.” We are simply moving the hair from the back of your head where it is resistant to the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to the top or the front of your head. When this hair is transplanted it grows in just the same way it would when it was on the back of your head.

2) How much donor hair do I have?

This depends on your class of hair loss according to the Norwood class 1 to 7. Usually men with a hair loss class 5 to 6 will be able to produce 4,000 to 5,000 micro grafts over a lifetime. These can be harvested and transplanted during two or more surgical procedures.

3) How many grafts do I need?

This also depends on your class of hair loss, which can be like a “catch 22.” The greater the hair loss, the more grafts you require to fulfill that need.

4) How fast will my hair grow?

Transplanted hair will grow at the same rate as non-transplanted hair, approximately one half inch per month. It should be remembered however, when hair is first transplanted it may take up to three to six months for growth to become noticeable. This varies with the color of the hair, shaft diameter, thickness and general density.

5) How soon after a hair transplant can I get my hair cut?

You may get a hair cut approximately one to two days after your suture removal, which will be 10 to 12 days after the actual hair transplant procedure.

6) Does transplanted hair require special shampoo or special care?

Your transplanted hair does not require any special shampoo or treatment formulas. You can begin to gently wash your transplanted hair on the day following the procedure. You will not require any special products, although there are products on the market that can aid and speed the healing process. You can check with your counselor for information on the products we carry.

7) Will I lose the transplanted hair like I lost the non-transplanted hair?

There are many types of hair on your body and each is different. For example, arm hair, nose hair, pubic hair and eyebrow hair are all quite different and have different resting phases. The hair on the front and crown of the head is hormonally dependent and genetically predisposed to be lost in some men. The hair in the donor area of the head is not hormonally dependent or genetically programmed to fall out. Therefore, when this hair is transplanted it will continue to grow over your lifetime.

8) Will I have to style my transplanted hair in a special way?

Think of transplanting hair as you would think of transplanting a tree. As long as the tree is relocated to good ground then it will continue to grow. For this reason there is no need to style your transplanted hair in any way different from your existing hair. Chances are after a few months you won't be able to tell the difference yourself. Your transplanted hair will be identical in every respect to your existing hair. It can be styled any way you wish.

9) How thick will my transplanted hair be?

This is a very difficult question and depends on a number of factors including, the total amount of hair that has been transplanted, the thickness of the hair shaft itself, the color of the hair, the contrast between the skin color and hair color, amount of curl in the hair, length of the hair and hair style just to name a few.

10) Am I a good candidate for hair transplantation?

Most men are good candidates; however, you must see a physician for that determination to be made. Your hair restoration specialist can give you more information about how to treat your specific circumstances.
