More than just DHT

For years now, we have believed that DHT is the sole cause of pattern hair loss in men and women… the most common form of hair loss, androgenetic alopecia.

It’s true that a build-up of DHT on genetically susceptible hair follicles does cause hair thinning and loss, but recent discoveries have uncovered new information that adds varying elements to hair loss, additional causes of hair loss and new directions to lead us to hair restoration.

We all know that it is the enzyme 5-alpha reductase (5AR) that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). BUT… 5AR isn’t the only culprit. Another enzyme, 3-ketasteroid reductase (3KR), also converts testosterone into DHT, so treatments that focus exclusively on blocking the 5AR conversion may be coming up short and not fully addressing the underlying causes of DHT formation (and the ultimate death of hair follicles).

Now add to this equation three additional discoveries:

1. DHT causes a change in hair follicles. An ongoing onslaught of DHT build-up actually changes hair follicles to a point that the body no longer recognizes them. This change signals the immune system to attack the follicle… to destroy them.
2. The auto immune response, where the body is actually attacking hair follicles like foreign invaders, causes another response… an inflammatory response – causing inflammation and damage to the hair follicles and surrounding tissue.
3. The combination of DHT build-up (constricting hair follicles and blocking from receiving proper blood flow and nutrition), the auto immune response and the inflammatory response exacerbates hair follicle’s lack of and need for nutrition. In essence, on top of everything else, hair follicles begin to starve to death.
